[Enjoy Food] Jjangddungeo Tang (shuttles hoppfish soup)

Jjangddungeo Tang (shuttles hoppfish soup) - Boseong Market

Jjangttungeo or shuttles hoppfish is also called "loach of the sea" or "mini seal" since it's strong enough to crawl or even hop on the mud.

Jjangttungeo is the only fish that hibernates from early November to April. Also, it cannot be farmed so it must be caught.

Jjangttungeo tang is made by boiling fillet with spice, unlike loach soup which boils grinded fish. What's good about jjangttungeo tang is that it has no fishy smell. The soup goes well with soju(distilled liquor made from grains). One could have a try when you tour to Korea.

Tip
Jjangttungeo is caught between mid-April and mid-October,
and it is the fattiest in September.
Thus, September is the time to enjoy the fish as a stew or grill.

[TalkTalk Market] Boseong Market

Boseong Market

Opened in 1955, Boseong Market was chosen as a "Cultural Tourism Market" in 2009 since it was located near natural tourist attractions such as green tea fields and Mt. Jeamsan. Most of all, it is located in Boseong, the cultural hometown of world famous pansori (Korean traditional vocal and percussional music performance). Local agricultural products as well as seafood caught from Deukryang Gulf are traded in the market, such as shallot, potato, kiwi, strawberry, green tea, linen, kkomak (ark shell clam) and nokdon (green tea-fed pork).

Boseong Market has linked local specialty shops with places of interest such as green tea fields, Yulpo beach, Beolgyo (the setting of Korea's one of the greatest novels "Taebaeksanmaek"), Mt. Ilimsan (the habitat of royal azalea), Mt. Jeamsan Recreational Forest, and Daewonsa buddhist temple, etc. Furthermore, the market established concert stages and experiential learning activities to add more flavor.

Plentiful Generosity and a Variety of Food

It is fun to choose between the variety of food at the Jeonju Moraenae Market, such as red bean kalguksu, sundae rice soup, whole chicken, Chinese pancakes, and sticky rice donuts. One of the original sundae rice soup restaurants at the Jeonju Moraenae Market is ‘Pi Sundae,’ which is highly known for its unchanging traditional taste for the past 23 years.

The Gochang Chicken Restaurant, also known as ‘Shijang Tong Dalk’ (Market Whole Chicken), is located inside one of the market’s alleys. This restaurant reminds customers of past memories and stimulates their.

Life of Freshness and Direct Transactions

The Jeonju Moraenae Market sells vegetables·fruit·meat·fish·dried fish·clothing and other miscellaneous items. Of the produce, the sale of farm-fresh Chinese cabbage and white radish is the most famous. The view at dawn at the Jeonju Moraenae Market is of merchants and their overflowing trucks of Chinese cabbage and white radish and a long line of retail dealers and customers who want to buy these products. Clean produce is harvested and delivered directly from nearby Soyang, Yongjin, and Jinan daily.

Eliminating the middleman, the fresh garden vegetables are sold at more affordable prices than competitive markets. There are also many customers who live in other areas that go out of their way to come to the Jeonju Moraenae Market because the quality of the vegetables is always good. Cows, pigs, chickens, and other livestock products raised in clean areas is another representative product of the Jeonju Moraenae Market.

[TalkTalk Market] Gyeongdong Market

Gyeongdong Market

GyeongdongMarket started when, after the Korean War, agricultural food vendors from the Northern GyeonnggiProvince and the GangwonProvince gathered in the area to sell their wares. In the 1960s, the market grew rapidly following the completion of a road connecting GangwonProvince with the Seoul area. Medical herbs from GangwonProvince were transported to the market in an ever-increasing number and the market became to specialize in these types of medicinal herbs.

The market sits across several blocks of Jegi-dong and Yongdu-dong in the Dongdaemun-gu district, but it is largely comprised of the Seoul Yangnyeongsi Market, a market selling ginseng, honey, cereals, and medicinal products. The Yangnyeongsi Market is responsible for about 70 percent of the nation’s total distribution of medicinal goods. In addition to other medicinal herbs, visitors can buy things like ginseng, bonnet bellflower, and balloonflower as well as tea ingredients like the fruits of schizandra and cornus, and Solomon's seal (tea ingredients that are hard to find in other parts of the city).
