[Enjoy KOREA] Changpyeong Slowcity, Damnyang

[Enjoy KOREA]
Changpyeong Slowcity, Damnyang

Damnyang is known for an abundant variety of attractions such as bamboo groves and dawn redwood(aka, Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu&Cheng). Especially, Changpyeong Slowcity is the best place where you can experience Korean Traditional houses and feel aesthetics of slow.

Because Changpyeong 5-day market is connected to Changpyeong Slowcity, you can go on a visit by foot after shopping in the market :)

The movement of Slowcity was begun in 1999, Italy. The name, ‘Slowcity’, means the village where pursues a slow life with good neighbors and nature instead of following only success.

If you visit to Changpyeong, you can feel you put the clock back. Korean old houses, low stone walls, and trees entwined with an ivy make you relieved. I guess this is the place to visit when we need to take a good look at ourselves.

Some women is busy making Yeot, Korean hard taffy. Others are making Korean traditional sweets and cookies. It is too beautiful to eat them.

How about walking along with stone walls and considering about living in agreement with nature?

Changpyeong 5-day Market

Changpyeong 5-day Market where tradition is alive!

Do you know the famous movie, ‘The Curious of Benjamin Button’? There is a village in Korea where takes a journey backwards through time. It is Changpyeong, Damnyang where joined International Slowcity.

Changpyeong 5-day Market reflects whole city, Changpyeong. It doesn’t sell industrial products made in factories. Instead of it, the villagers make something good like snacks by hand and put them to market.

Changpyeong is a small and peaceful village, but the market is crowed with lots of people.

It is too difficult to find products made in factories because the village keeps the traditions of the men who have gone before them. The market is full of the products that people have grown and made by hand.

Your mouth might water at the sight of lots of delicious food. There are fermented soybean lump, vegetables pickled in soy sauce and Injeolmi, Korean traditional rice cake made from the glutinous rice and coated with bean flour. They’re fit to live in smaller size and amounts because the village women come out to sell things, carrying them in their hand or on their heads. We can guess that they always do their utmost to entertain our mouth :)

Are you full? But this is not the end. You can enjoy the famous food in this region, Boiled rice served in soup! If you enter the street where the 5-day market is held, you can see the street of Gukbap, boiled rice served in soup.

Welcome to Changpyeong 5-day market, a place of great charm :)

[Talk Talk Market] Gwangcheon Cave Salted Shrimps Market

[Talk Talk Market]

Gwangcheon Cave Salted Shrimps Market

Gwangcheon used to be a anchorage even though it is land now. The anchorage was crowded with lots of ships and merchants who wanted to sell seafoods from their ship. Gwangcheon Market developed in this way.

Then, how was Cave Salted Shrimps developed?

In 1950, people living near the anchorage called Ongam used to dig and bury a jar full of Salted Shrimps in the ground. However, the Salted Shrimps spoiled easily in the summer and people had to throw them away. There was a terrible vicious circle that over half of Salted Shrimps they produced were thrown out.

At that time, Mr. Yun who retired as a miner and sold Salted Shrimps faced with same problem. He recalled the environment where he worked as a miner and carried out challenge that he stored the Salted Shrimps in the abandoned mine.

The result of his challenge was surprising! He stored Salted Shrimps in June, and they change into higher-quality Salted Shrimps without decaying. So, Mr. Yoon started to dig in abandoned mine with villagers. Fortunately, they dug with their bare hands because the mountain was made up of talcum, soft rocks that have plenty of water. It was the moment that Salted Shrimps that couldn't help throwing away in a wastebasket turned into the Special Salted Shrimps as a representative food in Gwangcheon.

How about visiting Gwangcheon Cave Salted Shrimps Market and tasting fresh Salted Shrimps that a man’s wisdom made? :-)
