[Enjoy Food] Gwamegi

[Enjoy Food]
Gwamegi

Pohang has lots of famous foods, so we want to introduce their food again.

Gwamegi is a Korean half-dried Pacific saury made during winter. It’s mostly eaten in the region of North Gyeongsan Province such as Pohang where a large amount of the fish is harvested. Especially, Guryoungpo Harbor in Pohang is the most famous.

Fresh saury is frozen at -10 degrees Celsius and is placed outdoors in December to repeat freezing at night and defreezing in the day. The process continues until the water content of the fish drops to approximately 40%.

Try some chewy and nutrious gwamegi from Guryongpo, where the northwesterly wind and the sea winds meet to create ideal conditions. :-)

Pohang Mulhoe :-

The highlight of Jukdo Market is the food called Mulhoe!

Pohang is famous as the origin of Mulhoe. People in Pohang started to eat mulhoe, and it spread to the whole country because of its tasty. So, We can enjoy the food called mulhoe everywhere.

Mulhoe is a type of sashimi, prepared by mincing fish or squid straight from the water, mixed with  leek onion, garlic, chili powder, etc. And cold water is poured over it along with ice cubes.

There are two stories about the origin. First, some people say that mulhoe was started by fishermen. They were too busy to have meals because of a big catch. So, they had to start to pour water over the fish and they ate them without chewing a lot.

Others say that fishermen started to have it for a hangover. They drank a lot last night and they wanted to relieve a hangover. But there is nothing to eat. So, they poured water and rice in fish.

We don’t know how it started exactly, But We should thank for the fishermen because they made it!

Visit Jukdo Market and enjoy coooool mulhoe :-)

Jukdo market is divided into fishery section, agricultural section and a section for manufactured goods. Among them, the market for manufactured goods was the matrix of Jukdo Market. It had gained commercial supremacy by 1990s’ and compared with Dongseong-ro.

Jukdo market has various things to sell. And, there are lots of alleys such as Octopus street, Hoe street., and chicken street. We can guess it has lots of attractions and food.
